HOLDTRADE GROUP embarked on a mission to modernise the rail infrastructure for Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), addressing longstanding inefficiencies that had hampered the company’s export capabilities.
In 1998, Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) approached HOLDTRADE GROUP with a critical challenge: the inefficiency of the existing railway system was hampering their manganese exports, leading to frequent derailments and costly delays.
We quickly mobilised a team to undertake a comprehensive track inspection, rehabilitation, and maintenance programme. This initiative aimed to reduce derailments, improve track standards, and train a local workforce, all without disrupting the ongoing rail traffic. The result was transformative. From an initial output of 350,000 tonnes in 1998, the Nsuta mine’s exports soared to over 1.8 million tonnes, thanks in large part to our expertise in rail logistics.
In 2018, GMC once again sought our assistance to overcome new logistical challenges. This project involved a thorough review of the entire logistical chain from the mine to the Takoradi port. We identified and fixed hotspots on the 70 km rail track, optimised travel patterns to increase tonnage, and overhauled locomotives and wagons. Within five months, we tripled the monthly tonnage on the rail, achieving this feat without interrupting existing rail traffic. The use of a trained local labour force ensured sustainable, long-term benefits for the region.
HOLDTRADE GROUPʼs interventions have significantly boosted GMCʼs export capacity, underscoring their role as a crucial partner in Ghana's industrial growth.
Ghana Bauxite Corporation approached Holdtrade in 1998 to assist in increasing railway capacity for the carriage of bauxite from their mine in Awaso to the port of Takoradi. Holdtrade developed the specifications and worked with Ghana Railways Corporation and rolling stock manufacturers to produce and supply specialised railway wagons. These wagons were required to integrate with the existing track infrastructure and be compatible with the loading & unloading facilities at the mine and in the port. A total of 91 wagons were delivered and rail tonnage capacity increased accordingly.
